Lore & Background

The series is set between the years 2257 and 2262, aboard the Babylon 5 space station located in the Epsilon Eridani system. The station is an O'Neill cylinder, five miles long, built after several major inter-species wars as a neutral ground for diplomacy. Major plotlines include intra-race upheaval, inter-race wars, and a millennial cyclic conflict between ancient races, particularly the Shadows and the Vorlons. The human characters become pivotal in resisting Earth's descent into totalitarianism under President Morgan Clark.

Reader's Guide

Babylon 5 was conceived as a 'novel for television' with a pre-planned five-year story arc, each episode envisioned as a chapter. This was unusual for American broadcast television at the time, as most shows maintained the status quo. The series featured permanent changes to its universe, with story arcs spanning multiple episodes and seasons. Tie-in novels, comic books, and short stories were developed to play a significant canonical part in the overall story. A reboot was announced in September 2021, and an animated feature-length film, Babylon 5: The Road Home, was released in August 2023. The show's ensemble cast included Michael O'Hare, Bruce Boxleitner, Claudia Christian, and Mira Furlan, among others.
