Babylon 5 is an American space opera television series created by writer and producer J. Michael Straczynski. It aired from 1994 to 1998 on the Prime Time Entertainment Network, following the human military staff and alien diplomats on a neutral space station built for galactic diplomacy and trade. The series is notable for its pre-planned five-year story arc, a novel approach for American broadcast television at the time.

The series is set between the years 2257 and 2262, aboard the Babylon 5 space station located in the Epsilon Eridani system. The station is an O'Neill cylinder, five miles long, built after several major inter-species wars as a neutral ground for diplomacy. Major plotlines include intra-race upheaval, inter-race wars, and a millennial cyclic conflict between ancient races, particularly the Shadows and the Vorlons. The human characters become pivotal in resisting Earth's descent into totalitarianism under President Morgan Clark.
