Mighty Orbots is a 1984 super robot animated series created through a joint collaboration of TMS Entertainment, Inc. and Intermedia Entertainment in association with MGM/UA Television. Directed by veteran anime director Osamu Dezaki with character designs by Akio Sugino, the series aired on Saturday mornings on ABC from September 8, 1984, to December 15, 1984. It is notable for being one of the few Saturday morning cartoons to have a definite series finale, ending with the destruction of the SHADOW homeworld and the defeat of the arch-villain Umbra.

Set in the 23rd century, the series follows Rob Simmons, a brilliant inventor who secretly creates six special robots—Ohno, Tor, Bort, Boo, Bo, and Crunch—that can combine to form Mighty Orbots to fight the criminal organization SHADOW, led by the cyborg-computer Lord Umbra. Rob poses as a mild-mannered robotics engineer but transforms into the Orbots Commander, a secret identity known only to Commander Rondu of the Galactic Patrol. The final episode, 'The Invasion of the Shadow Star,' ends with the SHADOW homeworld destroyed and Umbra defeated 'once and for all,' differing from most other animated series of the time where the villain always escaped.
