Synduality
A post-apocalyptic saga of drifters, androids, and the quest for Histoire.
Synduality is a Japanese mixed-media project created by the Bandai Namco Group. It encompasses an anime television series, manga, light novels, and a spin-off novel, all set in a post-apocalyptic world where a catastrophic rainfall known as the 'Tears of the New Moon' wiped out over 92% of the global population. The project's primary narrative follows drifters—pilots of bipedal weapons called Cradles—who battle giant creatures called Enders while seeking a mythical location known as Histoire.

Lore & Background
The Synduality universe begins in 2099 with the 'Tears of the New Moon,' a blue rain that kills humans on contact and transforms animals into aggressive giants called Enders. Survivors built underground cities, notably Amasia, which collapsed in 2222, scattering technology and allowing ordinary people to become drifters. The anime Synduality: Noir follows Kanata, a drifter who discovers a mysterious Magus named Noir, and their journey to find the legendary Histoire.
Key characters include Kanata, a Magusless drifter who dreams of reaching Histoire; Noir, a Type Zero Magus with a hidden dual identity as Mystere; and Ciel, a singer who is secretly a spy. The series aired from July 2023 to March 2024, with two cours and theme songs by Stereo Dive Foundation and Arcana Project. Spin-off media include the novel Synduality: Kaleido and the manga and light novel Synduality: Ellie.
Reader's Guide
Synduality represents Bandai Namco's expansion into transmedia storytelling, blending mecha action with themes of survival and human-android relationships. Its significance lies in its detailed world-building—from the catastrophic blue rain to the societal collapse of Amasia—and its exploration of memory, identity, and trust through characters like Noir/Mystere. The project's legacy is tied to its anime, which streamed globally on Disney+, Hulu, and Star+, and its supplementary manga and novels that deepen the lore. By focusing on drifters and their Magus partners, Synduality offers a fresh take on the post-apocalyptic genre, emphasizing cooperation over isolation. Its impact is modest but notable within the mecha and sci-fi anime community, particularly for its dual-personality android protagonist and the unresolved mystery of Histoire.
